What defines maturity for a corporate legal department? The answer certainly may vary depending on things like the size, complexity, industry, etc. of the company the in-house legal staff serves. Anyone who claims there is one clear and totally consistent path for every legal department, hasn’t worked with very many legal departments. But, based on our experience with dozens of the most complex international legal organizations, we have identified certain patterns and goals that are common. We’ve compiled those into a maturity scale that defines progression paths for six distinct areas of legal operations. Each department may grow in these areas at different rates and in different ways, but generally they are in play in every legal department
- Value – how the legal department is perceived
- Strategy – how engaged it is in corporate strategy
- Sourcing - the way it buys outside legal services
- People - how its people interact with the organization
- Process – is what’s in place efficient and effective
- Technology - to what extent it leveraged

Where are you going?
As a General Counsel, it is important to know where you stand in each of these areas and where you want to go. You may fall into different levels of maturity for each area. Similarly, you may aspire to be an over-achiever in some areas and simply adequate in others depending on corporate mandates, resource realities and your own legal operations strategy. Once you understand where you are, you can begin to define where you want to go and, more importantly, how you are going to get there. Yerra helps many GCs through Target Operating Model exercises, and we’ve created this maturity scale as part of that process. It’s a great way to visualize the current state vs. ideal state. How will you get there?
Common feedback we’ve heard in working with legal departments all over the world is that there are lots of people out there who will tell you where you need to go. There are fewer who stick by you and actually get you there. This disconnect is one of the things that led us to develop Yerra Clearly and then enhance the offering with Yerra Clearly 2.0. Many times, General Counsel and their teams spend countless hours formulating a flawless strategy and long-term legal department roadmap, only to hit a wall when it comes to finding adequate resources to implement it. Justifying the budget for more headcount, big software implementations and everything that goes along to support that becomes a barrier to progress along the maturity scale.
Yerra Clearly helps move clients along the scale by eliminating the challenges of adding headcount and complex software implementations. It is a total solution that combines expertise, teams and technology to better manage operations, contracts, legal & IP spend, knowledge management and engagement between legal and business units.
