As a litigation partner and trial attorney, Phil represented Fortune 100 companies in sensitive and complex disputes and investigations. He tried a dozen jury cases, all to defense verdicts. Throughout his career as a partner, Phil delivered strategic advice that enhanced the ability of his clients to defend litigation in a way that met their business objectives. He became highly skilled at the use of early resolution techniques, alternative fee arrangements, and budgeting to control costs. Throughout his career, Phil also has been a leader in the civic arena. He served on the Northwestern University Board of Trustees for 25 years, was one of four vice chairs, and was a member of the executive committee. In 2015, Phil was appointed to serve as Vice President and General Counsel of Northwestern University. In that capacity, he conducted an organizational assessment of the office of general counsel that resulted in significant restructuring. He also effectively managed high profile litigation matters for the University. Phil is recognized as a leader on the issue of diversity in the law profession. In 2007, his article on “Confronting Race” was featured in the July edition of the Chicago Lawyer. In 2008, he received the Advocate for Diversity Award from John Marshall Law School. Phil now splits his time between his homes in Los Angeles and Chicago. He holds a JD degree from the University of Chicago and a BA degree in Political Science from Northwestern University.
